The Heidrun platform in the Norwegian Sea has 16 tension legs which are balanced and adjusted according to wind and weather conditions. SINTEF is currently conducting a preliminary study to monitor the platform’s tension legs and leg components, because the power monitoring measurement system installed 25 years ago is now beginning to experience problems. SINTEF’s task is to assemble subcontractors with the necessary technological expertise, and assess technology and installation methods. Bigger design and subsea contracts must be in place before testing and trials begin. The preliminary project will continue until May, followed by a couple of years before the system is fully qualified for installation.
